U.S. Embassy Ankara issued the
following Warden Message on April 19, 2007:
Spring has traditionally marked an annual uptick in the PKK’s tempo of violence. The same could be the case this year. The Kurdish separatist group Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK) recently issued a general warning, similar to ones issued in past years, that it will attack tourist facilities in Turkey. This year’s warning included the targeting of tourists, in particular Europeans. There are no indications of specifics or timeframes, and it should be noted that the PKK has not directly targeted Americans in the past. Anonymous warnings were recently received by phone at the Consulate General in Istanbul. The credibility or motive behind the calls is not known, although they may be harassment calls. Separately, the Embassy also continues to monitor the progress of an Armenian genocide resolution in Congress and the potential for anti-American demonstrations or other actions of concern.
U.S. citizens in Turkey are advised to increase their security awareness.
The U.S. Mission in Turkey is in a heightened threat environment and has
taken measures to enhance its security posture. For the latest security
information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor
the Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet website at
http://travel.state.gov,
where the current Worldwide Cautions, Public Announcements, and Travel
Warnings can be found.

BEIJING: The Chinese capital was in the grip of its coldest weather in 20 years Tuesday after snow storms caused chaos, while South Korea sent out an army of civil servants and soldiers to clear clogged roads. China's national weather centre said the mercury dipped Tuesday to minus 15.6 degrees Celsius (four Fahrenheit) - the lowest in more than two decades, after Beijing was hit by its heaviest snowfall in 60 years at the weekend. UK Did Not Pass Plane Bomber Intel To the U.S. January 5, 2010 Gordon Brown's spokesman says there is "no suggestion" the UK passed intelligence to the US that they did not act on, regarding the alleged Detroit plane bomber. It follows reports that the White House accused the Prime Minister's spokesman of making a "mistake" when he appeared, on Monday, to confirm the UK told the US that Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab had links to extremists over a year ago.
